I was born in Mexico City, Mexico. My father was a physician specializing in internal medicine. My mother was raised in Minnesota. I attended the American School in Mexico City and was raised in a bilingual household. I am the oldest of five children.
I attended Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania starting in 1972 and graduated with Distinction with a BA and a major in Psychology. From 1976 until 1979 I attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas where I also received high marks. After earning my MD degree I completed a three-year residency in Family Medicine at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital in San Pedro, California in 1983.
From 1983 until 1990 I worked in private practice in Fort Collins, Colorado
with my former wife, who is also a family physician and who also graduated from
Baylor and San Pedro Peninsula hospital. We divorced in 1990 and I continued
to practice alone until September 1996. In 1996 I merged my practice with Associates
in Family Medicine. I returned to a solo practice format in April 2002. My medical
practice is small, and very personal by design. I think of it as the antithesis
to Corporate Medicine.
